The public library has an opportunity to create collections, resource guides, and community collaborations that provide evidence-based sexual and reproductive health information to the community.

The United Nations defines good sexual and reproductive health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system.” It further states that people need access to accurate information to make knowledgeable sexual and reproductive health decisions.

Unfortunately access to credible sexual and reproductive health information is difficult to navigate. Enter the public library. This four-week course will guide you through the key steps to make your library well-equipped to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information.

In this course students will learn how to:

  • Communicate the basic concepts of sexual and reproductive health and how it relates to public librarianship
  • Develop evidence-based collections of books and online resources and promote materials within the library’s physical and digital space
  • Provide patron-friendly reference services that is supportive and affirming
  • Create resource guides for continuing education and community collaborations with health organizations

Intended Audience:

This course is ideal for librarians who are brand-new to this topic. The class space will include readings, lectures, and weekly activities to put the class concepts into practical application.
