In this self-paced tutorial, you are offered strategies to create a productive working relationship between the library board and the professional staff and how to effectively communicate with library board members. Whether you are a current public library director or looking to become one, throughout the four part course, you will learn how to:
- Inform and impress your library board members
- Express the roles and responsibilities between library directors and library boards
- Activate advocates and encourage ambassadors in your library board
- Understand the Wisconsin public library landscape
There are four parts to this tutorial. Parts 1-3 are designed for working with your library no matter where you are located. Part 4 is optional and will focus specifically on Wisconsin Library Board policies.

Course Designer
Jaime Healy-Plotkin served for nine years on the Madison Public Library Board, including four years as President, and 15 years on the Board of Trustees of the South Central Library System, including three years as the Chair. On the statewide level, Jaime served for two terms as Chair of the Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND), a council with appointments of library professionals and the public by the Governor of Wisconsin, which makes recommendations on library and technology issues to the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Legislature. She received a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and had positions in academic and special libraries in Madison, Wisconsin. She is a Lecturer at UW-Madison’s iSchool and recently taught courses to graduate students on the public library, government documents, and collection management.
