More a “computer liberal artist” than a computer scientist, Dr. Nyhoff has more than two decades of experience teaching computing across the curriculum, making interdisciplinary connections between computing and other fields of study, including the arts, humanities, and social sciences. He draws frequently from digital media and from the theories and practices of theatre and performance to teach introductory computer programming and to interrogate the performativity and theatricality of the graphical user interfaces that we use every day. He has authored multiple works on the “Processing” programming environment and collaborates with Daria Tsoupikova of the University of Illinois – Chicago in exploring the use of theatre/performance theories to create compelling experiences in “CAVE” spaces that combine augmented/virtual reality with embodied presence.
