This course was updated in 2023 by Yesianne Ramírez-Madera. Yesianne Ramírez-Madera comes from Puerto Rico and received her education in Comparative Literature (BA) and then Information and Library Science (Masters) at the Universidad de Puerto Rico.  She has worked at Madison Public Libraries since 2016 and is a leader in her community as a supervisor at the Meadowridge branch of the Madison Public Library. Ramírez-Madera received a Movers & Shakers 2021–Change Agents Award, Issued by Library Journal for her work as a Co-founder of Madison Public Library Racial Equity Change Team. The team has connected to other library and civic equity initiatives as well. She knows the importance of public libraries in fostering strong neighborhoods. “Today, we can think of libraries as places designated to help communities connect and thrive.”

This course was originally designed by Rebecca Van Dan. Rebecca has loved learning other languages since living for a year in Aguascalientes, Mexico, as a high school exchange student.  She majored in Spanish and English with a Norwegian minor at St. Olaf College in MN, lived in Seville, Spain, for 2 years, and she has traveled widely in Latin America with her Spanish/Venezuelan husband.  Rebecca was the Head of Youth Services and Teen Librarian for the Middleton Public Library for 20 years and believes in the importance of community engagement between libraries and the Spanish-speaking population.  She started a Spanish collection at the Middleton Library,  translated library information and flyers into Spanish, organized a number of events for the Latinx community, and has written articles for La Comunidad newspaper and spoken on the La Movida radio to promote library services to the Spanish speaking population.
