Libraries in real life are not the stereotypical libraries we see on TV. Anyone who works in a library can attest to that. Patrons-in-crisis, rambunctious kids, and others who are frustrated with library policy are the reality. First amendment audits, whereby self-described auditors record and publish footage of library workers and patrons, are on the rise along with book challenges. It is imperative that library workers learn how to react to First Amendment audits, upset patrons, and other escalated situations. This course will better prepare you to thrive in the new library landscape that we encounter on a daily basis.
In this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the basics of the First Amendment and its application to libraries.
- Handle First Amendment audits and other challenges professionally.
- Implement strategies for library safety and security, including situational awareness.
- Provide improved customer service, with a particular emphasis on de-escalation techniques.
Course Audience:
This course is intended for current and prospective library employees who would like to increase their preparedness in the face of First Amendment audits and other challenges facing library workers today.
